Car does not start. Air Flow Issue

I Hope someone can help me out. I recently took out the factory air flow system on my 1985 318i and installed a cone filter directly to the mass air flow meter (sensor).there where a couple of lose conectors and wires which I tied off to the side, on a bracket. The car ran great for a while but recently the car starts hard and suddenly dies...like it does not get any air. I tried regulating the flow of air manually but it is useless, the engine does not respond. I do not know what to do. Any much needed advice would be welcomed. Do Mass air flow meters (sensors) break or malfunction often? how about the cold start valves, do they wear out easily?
