1991 won't turn over

My 1991 auto turns over sometimes but can't shift out of park without pulling out button on console. When it won't turn over I pull out button shift to neutral sometimes reverse or between park and reverse. If I hold the key while moving shifter I usually find the sweet spot. I think problem is neutral safety switch but it is around 90$ has anybody had this problem or knows whats wrong

Re: 1991 won't turn over

Probably is the neutral safety switch. Its a simple on/off momentary type switch and is easily checked with an ohm meter. In one position it should show lots of resistance (ohms) and in the other position zero resistance (or very close to zero). If the readings don't make a significant change from position to position (on/off) then the switch is bad.

Otherwise it is out of position. Adjust it back to the proper position.

Automatic transmissions also have a transmission range sensor that tells the transmission whether it is in park, neutral, etc. It could be out of adjustment or bad.
