Question rear wiper comes on when I brake

Can anyone help? I shut the back, and the rear wiper came on and fluid started coming out. Now when I hit the brakes the same thing happens. There is also a whinning noise coming from the washer fluid pump when I hit the brakes. Any suggestions?

I'm sure some help will be along soon enough, but seriously, you've GOT to get a video of that! That's definitely the strangest XJ quirk I've ever heard!

~Good Luck!!!

Re: rear wiper comes on when I brake

What year and model is your jeep and does it have a third brake light? It almost sounds like there is a wiring problem with the connector for the third brake light and rear wiper motor. On my 92 the wiring for that comes to a connector on the driver side behind the plastic panel behind the spare tire and just inside the body panel. I'd check there to make sure that there's no loose or frayed wires that could be shorting out when you hit the brake. Also check at the top of the back gate where the wires go through the little loom piece to the rear hatch and make sure that there's nothing getting pinched there causing a short. If you do have the third brake light in your jeep you could try removing it and pulling out the bulb and then hitting the brake to see if it still does it, if it doesn't then you know there's a short somewhere if it does then it's time to start tracing the wiring back. But let us know all the info about your jeep so we know what we're working with as the wiring for a 2000 is different from an 89.

Re: rear wiper comes on when I brake

It is a 2000 cherokee classic with a third brake light. I rigged a stick to push on the brakes and opened the rear hatch, and when I did the rear wiper stopped moving. But if a close the hatch about 3/4 of the way down it starts up again. So I'am thinking there might be some kind of pressure or mercury switch that could be the problem? Does that sound possible?

There might be a 12v short happening in the wire harness (boot) at the back hatch. Look at the hinge area and see the 'boot', it can be pulled back from either end. The wiring is inside. Check for damages. (NO mercury switches- sry)

~Good Luck...

There is probably a problem with the harness where it goes in at the rubber boot at the top of the hatch (like the citizen says...). Such as... a broken wire or insulation. Look at the middle of the roof when the the hatch is open. You might need to remove part of the headliner.
