How to race?!/
Hey, wasup guys. I was wondering if I could get a few racing tips or how you guys go about doing it. As of now I have a 95 GLE Maxima, all stock. I want to add stuff but I can't afford anything right now. I was wondering how you guys do this racing off the line at a stop light lets say? This is how I do it. I look at the opposite light and wait for it to turn red then I have 1 second for mine to turn green. While this is happening I hold down my brake and press down the gas. When the light changes I let go and floor it. Thats basically all I do. I"m in an automatic so....someone give me tips or say how they do it in a auto. Also if you know where to get any cheap mods, if you could say so
Thanks Scott |

I have a 95 Max auto also and the nice thing about a Max is that you don't have rev up your engine to get it to go like most people have to do with other cars. Usually when I race I just punch it real hard on the launch taken the rpm up to about 6500 it drops down to about 3000rpm then rises up to about 6000rpm. A Max auto will redline just like a 5 speed it wont hold you back when you push it hard. Actually it seems like my Max likes it better when I push hard. By the way I have never been beaten by anyone the only car that has ever been able to let me see their tailights was a Passat that challenged me right after I just got through working on my brakes and my CV Boot so my car was way out of alignment and I had to take it easy especially since it was the first time I had ever replaced a CV Boot.

i usually wait till the light on other side is turning yellow, keep on the brake and gently push down on gas and get it to 1500-2000 and then jus launch like that. i would like to try it with the OD off, but my f**kin button dont work for some reason. any1 with an auto had that prob?

I have auto tranny also. When Im racing some1 from light to light, I do it this way. I put my car in neutral while the light is RED. Once I see that opposite light is turning yellow to red, I rev my max to about 1500 rpm in neutral. Once light turns green for me, I drop the shifter in 1st, and floor it but not all the way down, otherwise I will spin out hardcore and lose the race. Once I reach red line in 1st, I swich to 2nd with O/D off (which is 3rd gear) and so on and so forth. I do manual shifting because I'll get more rpm in each gear. More rpm=more power, but at the same time by switching manually in a car with auto tranny you are f*cking it (tranny) up. I do it rarely, because most of the slovics over here already remember my max.

doing nuetral drops is horrible for your car. you should be especially careful with the crap tranny on the max. this is what i like to do, when youre stopped at the light put the car all the way down into first and turn the overdrive off. then when i take off i can let the rpms go a little higher for a little more acceleration rather then the tranny shifting at like 6000 you can run closer to 7. after the shift from 1st to 2nd and then finally to drive, its out of your hands.
another thing you can try is keeping your car in drive the entire time and when you can feel the car is about to shift let off the gas a little as if you were drive a 5speed and then when it drops hit the gas hard again and the car will shift quickly. you might get a little jump out of the car but it feels pretty cool. however, sometimes you can do this and it will throw off the timing a little and the car may drop back down to 1st for a second and you will lose. takes practice but eventually you'll be having more fun in your car even when youre not racing, and you'll be going to the gas station more often to. |

Yeah, neutral launches are definitely bad for the tranny, the best way to do it, like 97max said, is to hold down the brake firmly, lightly press down the gas for some RPM's, and let off the brake quickly when the light hits green.

why did you all get automatics if you planned on racing?
5 speed all you do is dump the clutch at around 1600 rpm. |

I have an automagic too and the way I do it is sort of like 97wvmax, I torque brake between 1800-2500 with the OD button off but I put the tranny in 2, this way the shift comes on faster but I don't accelerate past 30 or 35 mph when I shift it into Drive. Bam, I ghost, I also get a nice sound from my K/N and it allows my Tornado to build up the air in the throttle body quicker.
You should try this but please do not, whatever you do please stay away from those neutral drops, the Max tranny is already a weak tranny without us putting undo strain on them, doing what your doing at the pacce of racing regularly will send your Max to the cardoctor real fast for a new tranny or rebuild:flash: |

I have an automagic too and my method is similar to 97wvmax's, I torque brake between 1800-2500 with the OD button Off, I also shift the tranny selector into 2 I anticipate the light change like you do when you're heads up racing and I nail the accelerater when light goes green.
When I hit 35 mph I switch the tranny from 2 to Drive, by this time the Max is in its' sweetspot where the torque really kicks in. My K/N and Tornado work together and make a nice sound plus there's a rush as if I have a blower or something to help speed me down the line. Bro, whatever you do please listen to all these guys on this thread as far as neutral drops are concerned, please don't do that to your tranny, the Max>great engine sh**ty tranny, keep doing neutral drops and your Max will have to go to the car-doctor and that would be just plain
