tcc and speedo problems, 89 sunbird
Hi all, I am brand new here, and I wish to replace the TCC on my sunbird. I see enough posts to convince me that this is my problem, but I can't find any that describe where this thing lives. My Haines or Clymer type manual suggested I buy some other manual for transmission repair, but my local NAPA doesn't seem to know or be motivated in finding such a book. I live in primative USA on a small Island with not much resources. I'm not afraid to dig into it, but would like to know where to begin digging.
The speedometer also reads about 30 percent faster than the actual vehicle speed. I have replaced the VSS and this made no difference at all. Any suggestions? my temp and oil gauges are also dead... could this be an indication that my instrument cluster is dying on me? Thanks for the help, mongrell |

Re: tcc and speedo problems, 89 sunbird
Yes, but I would bet on a bad ECM, 3.1s are kinda known for it..... ECM controls all gauges as well as the TCC..... Make sure you replace it with the proper SERVICE number series, and swap your chip inside, otherwise the car may not run after that..... If the TCC is definitely your problem (doubtful, I believe the ECM is causing all this) it is located on the bellhousing area of the tranny behind the cover facing your driver's fenderwell that says "Hydramatic".
