hard starting

on my one 98 grand cherokee it seems to be taking too long to start. in the morning when the engine is cold, it starts right up normally (between 1-3 seconds for the engine to start). and after a run of any distance, if the jeep was to sit for a half hour, it will still start up normally. however, after i run the jeep and it sits longer than a half hour, it takes between 3-6 seconds for the engine to start up (which makes no sense because it sits all night and starts up normally in the morning ). now i am hoping i can rule out the fuel pump because in the morning there is obviously pressure because the engine starts no problem. i have replaced the ignition coil and put gas treatment in the tank. there is also a new battery and alternator.

another thing is the jeep began to start like this after i had a custom exhaust put on. there is a flowmaster super 40 series muffler on it. the same CAT is still on there. i cannot figure out what is going on so any help is appreciated. thanks.

Re: hard starting

I had the same problem with my 2000 laredo. I found a service bulliten for a long crank time. Said to replace a seal in the fuel pump. I took it to a dealer while it was under warranty, and they replaced it, fixed the problem. My jeep got so bad, that it would stutter while starting it and back fire and set codes, I think it was #4 cyl misfire code. If you can get your hands on a service bulliten list for that yr, try looking it up. hope this help

Re: hard starting

Does your jeep throw any codes? It could be the crank sensor. Jeeps are notorious for having crank sensor problems.

Re: hard starting

I'd start with the crank sensor...could save you a ton of money. My 02 overland would cut out in the middle of driving. Dealers couldn't figure it out cuz it was intermittent. By the time I took it in the symptoms don't show up. Change fuel filter and was about to change the pump, luckily I didn't. Took the advice from one of the mechanics at jeep creep and solved my problem. Dealer told me it can't be the cps. They said if its the cps it wouldn't start. The tech at jeep creep told me the cps can mimic other faults in the system. Hope this helps!
