1998, GL 3.8L: How to take off front hub?
I've got the hub nut off (29mm deep socket, big cheater bar). I've taken the brakes and rotor off. But the hub will not budge. Using a wheel puller only pushes the axle screw (what the hub nut is attached to) inward...the hub remains fixed. This has been on for 9 years, 130K miles. What am I missing? What tool do I need to get this hub off?

A hydraulic press or a Hub Tamer. You have to press out the hub. Once that is out, you remove the retainer clip and press out the bearing. Reverse to install. Cannot do this job without the right tools. Or, you can remove entire knuckle and take to a machine shop and have them do it.

Re: 1998, GL 3.8L: How to take off front hub?
After removing the steering knuckle from the vehicle, I drive the hub out with a large hammer and a deep socket of the appropriate diameter. (Just takes a few hits) Getting it back together requires a press (and "adapters") as mentioned above.

As far as the tools go. The Hub Tamer can be found here.
It's made by OTC/SPX and is little expensive unless you plan to work on things like this more than once.

Re: 1998, GL 3.8L: How to take off front hub?
HI
On my '96 I pulled the whole knuckle and took it to my local Ford dealer. They charged $40 3 years ago to press the hub and old bearing out, and press in the new bearing and re-press the hub. |
