Exclamation starting problems

Hey, I've read through some postings here and elsewhere and I wonder if I have some combination of problems,or if the starting problem has changed.
Until recently, my 88 GT started on the first turn, everytime (even on rudely cold winter nights and mornings in Ottawa! - and no engineblock heater.)
I have twice driven an 8 hour commute between here and hometown, both times, car didn't want to turn over after stopping for a break (heat problem?).
Lately (last few weeks) problems starting are more general, engine just doesn't want to turn over on first turn, and I can smell gas(I could smell this off and on at other times, before starting problems got obvious).
New fuel lines and fuel filler neck last year, voltage lloks good on battery, hoping to have a look under hood and spend time pulling things apart on Sunday if it doesn't rain - any suggestions? (going by what I've read so far,I wonder if most likely culprit is relay. What is cold start injector?)

I have enjoyed my 88 enough to want more celicas/supras (can't deal with a funky but problematic rotary, or love an mr2), trying to figure out how much i have to spend on near future (won't have full time job until after graduating in December, not enough cash now to do bodywork properly or full mechanical). I love the pragmatic hatchback load capacity and the visual appeal of this and the slightly later cars ('shark' celicas!).
