"Four men and one woman were taken into custody early Saturday afternoon on suspicion of theft and conspiracy to kidnap, a Scotland Yard she said.

Four others were arrested late Saturday and early Sunday, police said in a statement.

Two men were arrested in relation to the theft aspect of the inquiry, while two others -- a man and a woman -- were arrested in relation to the kidnapping plot.

All nine are in custody in London.

Channel 4 news reported that the sum which was to have been demanded was £5 million ($7.8 million).

Victoria Beckham gave birth in September to the couple's second child, a boy named Romeo. Her husband, who plays for England's national soccer team and Manchester United, is one of Britain's biggest sports stars and the Beckhams are among the country's most popular celebrities.

She was at Old Trafford on Sunday watching her husband play to a 2-1 win over Southampton.

Sources close to the couple told the UK's Press Association that Victoria was told of the threat before the game kicked off but did not tell her husband until full time.

Victoria shot to superstardom in the 1990s as part of the Spice Girls. The band has sold about 40 million albums and 25 million singles worldwide and has had nine No. 1 singles in Britain alone.

This year, the former "Posh Spice" has been seeking to revive her solo career with a new single, "A Mind of its Own."

The alleged plot to snatch Victoria Beckham is not the first kidnap threat the Beckhams have had to deal with.

An elite police organised crime unit reportedly helped foil a plot in November 1999 to snatch Victoria and baby son Brooklyn, then 10 months old, while David played for England against Scotland at Wembley.

A police operation, including officers from Scotland Yard's SO1 organised crime group, thwarted the kidnappers, according to reports.

Reports suggested an underworld crime figure planned to grab the pair and drive them to a house in an exclusive part of Hampstead before a six figure ransom demand was made.

No arrests were made because the kidnappers never got past the planning stage and left no written evidence, according to the reports.

In May 2000, another threat to the security of the Beckhams was revealed. Police launched an investigation after Victoria received a death threat -- a defaced newspaper photograph with a drawing of a bullet pointing towards her, according to reports.

The image was also said to show blood pouring from her head, with the message: "You are going to get what's coming to you."

Without wishing to be offensive,the Beckhams are a couple who put far too much effort into their public profile.While it is fair to say that he has a fair ability at his chosen sport,his wife is nothing more than a clotheshorse,a media creation for a country starved of talented glamour.I can't say that I condone kidnapping,but in all honesty,I couldn't see any merit in paying that kind of ransom for the airhead.
