Didn't pass DEQ

My sister took her 98 Cavalier, 2.2L i think, 90000 miles, to DEQ in Oregon today and it did not pass. Diagnostic Trouble code from DEQ was
P0118 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Input. If anyone has experience with getting cars passed DEQ please help, the tags are up this month. Thanks

Re: Didn't pass DEQ

Its your coolant temp sensor going out of the factory voltage safe range. Could either be a bad sensor itself, or the wiring to the sensor. On the ones I have dealt with they go under that coolant pipe and get pulled alot of times. This over time with help of heat breaks the wires on the inside. GM actually sells that wire clip with about 4 inches of wire to replace it. I can't remember the part # off hand, but its out there.

Re: Didn't pass DEQ

Well I just replaced the sensor for $12 from Autozone. The dealers want $40 for the wiring clip so I'll wait and see on that. The female end of the sensor was actually broke off and attached to the wiring clip and held on with ducktape so......I think thats the problem. DEQ closes in 10 min. though so I cant make it until wednesday but I will update. Thanks alot for your help classic I wouldnt have figured that out on my own.
