Battery/power steering...what gives.

I parked my car for a week or so and when I went to move it to storage, the car started but I had no power steering and the lights were quite dim. I managed to drive it to where it was going, and disconnected the battery. I now come to drive it again and I jumped the battery. Still no power steering, car died after a few minutes of driving. SO...

I bought a new battery and installed it. Still no power steering and the battery light is on.

WHAT GIVES...there were no problems before.

Could an alternator problem shut down the power sterring, dim the lights slightly and show no other problems?

Please help.
