97 Cav Unknown Problem

A couple months ago, my husband was driving his car and decided he wanted to make it through a yellow light before it turned red. Not knowing there was a dip at that intersection, he spead up. He was going fast enough that once his car hit the dip it flew in the air, crashed to the ground, sparks flew from under the car. Fluid came gushing out of the bottom...it was tranny fluid...he kept driving for about 2 miles until his breaks went out and he pulled over, and since then he has replaced the transmission pan, but the car still won't work.

We replaced the battery because it was leaking acid. Unfortunately, when he put the new battery in the alarm went off non stop. He cut the wire, thus causing the engine not to start. We had a friend who installs alarms come take it out. Anyway, now when my husband turns the key it makes a noise like it's getting ready to start, but doesn't turn over. Not a ticking noise like the battery is dead. You can hear it outside of the car when he turns the key...it gets ready, but doesn't turnover. We're thinking starter. He got under the car and said fluid or something was leaking from the starter (I don't know if there is even fluid in the starter), but apparently it looked damaged. He has been able to put another starter in, but he's confused about the wiring. His first language is german and he doesn't understand the text in the car manual we have when it comes to the wiring.

Here are his questions:

There are 4 wires connected to the starter
-a thick red one which connects to the battery
-a thin red one and 2 black ones

He doesn't know how to connect or where the last 3 wires go. What are the consequences if he connects them incorrectly? Is there a good diagram of how to do this somewhere? I found one on google images, but the writing is so tiny I can barely read it. He needs to have information in basic terms with descriptions of the parts so he knows which wire, tool, etc. would look like. Thanks for any help.
