98 kia wont shift

my friend has a 98 kia sephia ls he said he smelt smoke when he went to start it one night then said forget it when it wouldnt start .. then took it to a shop paid 400 bucks to get some fuses replaced and some wireing fixed but its not wanting to shift out of first when in drive and manually shifting it doesnt work either ....im at a lost no codes no lights everything is fine except for this ... any ideas

needs a transmission. Early Kia trans are junk and had many problems. They also had ground connection problems that affected the transmission.

ok well finally had a chance today to look at the car some more now its driving fine in the low gears 1-2 and reverse is fine but when it comes to acctual drive its really sluggish ... its throwing the cel but my reader wont pull up the code it will just clear it and once you clear it its gone till you re start the car ..... whats the ground problem you speak of ne remedy to fix it or is the a computer grounding problem
