06 Silverado Brake Issues & Upgrades
06 Silverado 1500
4WD Extended Cab 5.3 Liter 25K Miles Issue: The front rotors are warped. The left front rotor has a groove in it. When I took it to the dealership, they told me that nothing was covered under the warranty and that I had gotten a rock in between the shoe and the rotor. They wanted to turn the left front rotor for $120 and then drive it to see if the right front rotor needed turned. If it needed turned then they was going to hit me up for another $120 for the right rotor. I told them to just put everything back together and that I didn't want their "band-aid" fix for my brake issues. Since I had not pulled a trailer or boat with the truck, just turning the rotors was not going to fix a thing and I would be right back down there handing them over some more money in about another 10K miles. Possible Solution: Instead of replacing the rotors and the break shoes with OEM parts, I would like to upgrade my brakes. I feel that if I do not upgrade, I will have the same issues again before I reach 50K miles on the vehicle or less if I start pulling something and I will end up shelling out the same amount of money again. There are many upgrade kits out there and I am looking for a rotor brake pad combination that will work. I'm not wanting a $1000+ upgrade kit. I'm currently looking at slotted rotors, but I have no experience with them, any input to a certain brand or make? I am looking at Power Slot but I cannot find any reviews on them, good or bad. If I do go with a slotted rotor, what kind of brake pad goes well with a slotted rotor? Is an OEM shoe sufficient? Thanks for any input that you can provide. |

Re: 06 Silverado Brake Issues & Upgrades
Sure, you could upgrade the entire braking system, but why. If the rotor is grooved, something was definitely wrong with it, and a rock, while not all that likely(I think), is a possibility. The stock brakes should be good for at least 50,000 miles and I've heard 100,000 miles are possible.
Now if you are really interested and want to spend the money, slotted rotors are great, but they are not needed unless you are doing alot of hard stops in a short time period. So, I guess I would say trust the dealer on this one, the brakes are more than adequate for these trucks as long as you keep it within the weight capacity and don't do anything extreme like going down a 70 degree slope holding the brakes the whole way. Re: 06 Silverado Brake Issues & Upgrades
I had a set(4) of Brembo slotted rotors and they worked fine...now I have a set of the cross drilled Brembos on the front with Hawk Performance pads and stock brakes on the rear and it stops better then it ever has.

The current OEM brakes are definitely suffucuent for 'normal' driving. I will say; I have NO experience towing anything, so that's as far as I go. |
