i have the 1990 probe lx with the 3.0 v6 5 speed. i was wonder how to get it so that the computer doesn't kick the tranny out of fifth when i hit around 120 ish. i still have like another 1000 rpms to go but it kicks it outta fifth when i hit around 120. i do know there is a plug at the speedo sensor. if i unplug it will it effect the car at all other then going faster. thanks any info would help. - jr

If you unplug it, it'll kill your spedometer I think and probably throw the check engine light but other than that no.

The 1990 LX has a cutoff switch at 113mph. You have to bypass the switch. Mine had the digital dash and anything past 85mph it would flash 85mph all of the time. I had to switch it over to KPH's on the dash to know when it was going to cut out. Go to the Probetalk forums and ask these guys how to do it. They will redirect you over to the Ford ranger guys who will give you a diagram for this bypass.
Personally, I wouldn't want to go any faster in these little cars. You blow a tire @113mph you just may kill yourself. Yah it was fun doing it with a stock engine but when I rebuilt my 3.0 and realized just how much faster I made it, I sold it. I WAS going to eventually kill myself in that thing. Was one of the fastest cars I ever had. I beat my SHO many a times with it...... |
