2001 Alero - Trac, ABS, and Service Vehicle Soon
They came on all at once about a week ago when I started the car, then after I started it a second time that day, the lights were gone. They came on again this morning. I went through a few threads, but couldn't find an exact answer - has anyone had this happen before?

It was off this morning, but I'm afraid it will come on again soon.

Re: 2001 Alero - Trac, ABS, and Service Vehile Soon
Welcome to AF.
Best thing to do is monitor the situation. If the lights come on again get it scanned with an ABS capable scanner. Could be a flaky wheel sensor at the hub/bearing assembly or a connector/wiring problem. Even though the ABS light is on it should not affect your conventional braking.

Re: 2001 Alero - Trac, ABS, and Service Vehicle Soon
Very common problem. GM has isolated the problem to a problem with the wiring harness. GM really screwed up in the placement of the wiring harness in these vehicles. The constant movement of the control arm detaches the wires inside the connector. GM has come out with new replacement harnesses that you can splice in place to take care of the problem. The TCS gets it's signals from the ABS, so a false ABS signal will turn off the TCS.

Thanks guys, so sounds like I shouldn't worry as much. I was beginning to think it was my transmission.

I have the same problems. I have changed both hub assemblies on the front and the lights are still on. I hope someone knows what this part is called. I need one badly.

I called the dealer today and it sounded like he had the part that i needed when i desribed it to him, but he said it was a special order and it was going to be like $175 is this the right part, i was hoping it would be less expensive for a harness and some wires

Re: 2001 Alero - Trac, ABS, and Service Vehicle Soon
I have had the same lights come on and they are telling me that I need to get the other bearing replaced as well, they said the ABS sensor is in the bearing. Should I pay the $250 to get it fixed or is it this other part that needs to get fixed?

Re: 2001 Alero - Trac, ABS, and Service Vehicle Soon
Not sure if the sensor is in the bearing or not (someone else will answer that I'm sure) but I can tell you the problem stated CAN certainly be because of a faulty sensor. I had my brakes changed once and they busted a sensor (leading me to think it is not IN the bearing) on my front driver's side - Same identical light errors as described. Took it back, they replaced the sensor, and lights be out / back to normal

Definitely. We were told that it might be a faulty sensor in one of the rear hubs.

Cool. Once in awhile I'm getting a weird shaking stall when going in reverse now. Not sure if that's related.

Re: 2001 Alero - Trac, ABS, and Service Vehicle Soon
The sensors are in the hubs. They are not replaceable separately, the whole hub must be replaced. Your stall problem is not related. The sensors only are used by the Traction Control, tire pressure warning, and ABS systems.

I have the same thing going nuts on my 2002 Alero, I'm glad it is GM's screwup and I hope that GM did issue a TSB on this

Re: 2001 Alero - Trac, ABS, and Service Vehicle Soon
I don't think they did, sorry. A look at each wheel sensor can help, you might find a loose or corroded connection at the hub. The wiring harnesses break on the front wheels most commonly, but the rear ones should be checked as well. You can also have the car scanned with a Tech II, it can tell you which hub is bad, and narrow down which hub or wiring harness to replace.
