Thumbs up Update on engine knock

Hi guys.... I know this is off topic, but I figured I'd let you guys know because it's sort of a continuation of an old thread. A long while ago in the Caprice section someone was talking about an engine knock and I mentioned my GMC Pickup doing the same at startup. Well recently the transmission went on it even though it only had 18k on it. I took it to a different guy and we found that the first guy never changed the bearings or the clutch plates due to the extreme wear for such a young transmission. The knocking in the engine was actually a knock from the flex plate banging back and fourth because the idiot mechanic used standard bolts on a metric torque converter, cross threading them and when they started to come loose the flex plate started moving around causing the knock at engine startup and shut off. Well $1500 late I have a COMPLETELY rebuilt transmission including a new gear train, new torque converter, new bearings, new clutches, and seals. Also comes with a 3 year 60,000 mile warrantee. The warrantee is what made me come to this guy, it's a lot more pricey, but a lot more worth it.

Re: Update on engine knock

Those are sometimes hard to diagnose, I've only run into a few instances of a loose torque converter. You hit upon the key element, it will be a clank or clunk when you start it or shut it off. A bad vibration sometimes goes with it.
