hatch pull-down mechanism

My sister was recently inducted into the Camaro club, she bought a 1991 3.1. Among other various minor things to fix is the hatch pull down thing. I never had a problem with my other 3rd gen. So, is it all one piece that needs to be replaced, or is there a relay or motor or what? As of right now it won't close, no matter how hard she slams it (bad idea) lol. I know this is a common problem on 3rd gens, but I have no knowledge of this particular fix. Help!

Re: hatch pull-down mechanism

It is several pieces, relay, switch, motor, gearbox and cutoff switch. Check here http://www.top-downsolutions.com/pro...95a10d6849093b for the repair kit. Lon is a great guy to deal with and has everything you'll need, and then some.

Re: hatch pull-down mechanism

the thing that usually goes up in thoes is the gears or motor. the gears are plastic and the teeth wear off. then the motor will keep running and either burn up or kill your battery. i took mine apart and locked it in place so when i put it back in, it just latches and unlatches like a regular hatch.

Re: hatch pull-down mechanism

i wouldnt worry about the fuse.i did the same as the moderator and unplugged mine because it would jam or just die as if it wasnt getting enough voltage.i plugged it in and tripped the switch that makes it go down with my finger, then when it got to the right height i unplugged it real quick.now it just opens and closes like a normal trunk.the trick is just to get it to latch low enough to seal, but high enough that you dont have to slam the hatch too hard.
