Re: How To Make Custom Decals

Are Testors products commonly available in Malaysia? Testor's custom decal system is probably the easiest way. All you need are a PC and an inkjet printer (besides images you want to print).

There're a couple of tricky parts that you need to pay attention to.
Spray the top-coat (included in the kit) lightly in several steps, so the moisture in the spray won't dissolve the ink. Another thing is to make sure you leave a little portion of clear film around each image when you cut it out of the sheet. Otherwise, when you soak a decal in water, the ink gets dissolved around the edge.

How do you get images small enough, say for underhood engine decals?

use photoshop to resize your images, as well as create a full sheet of decals before printing.

make sure you print out your decals on a regular white paper to see if the size is correct as well as the quality.

There're two ways to do this. Any graphic manipulation software should have a function called scaling or resizing. You basically find a large image, and shrink it to the desired size. (That way, some imperfections will also be shrunk to almost unnoticeable size) Another way is to use the printer driver, but not all printer has this feature. If equipped, the driver should have a setting which allows you to manipulate the size of the print-out, without resizing the original art.

Re: How To Make Custom Decals

You can shrink images to almost nothing with Photoshop and other imaging programs, but the small details won't survive the printing process. Inkjet printers don't have microscopic resolution, so small stuff will blend together. But who reads the DOT fine print anyhow? The idea is to give the IMPRESSION that those stickers are there.

You can get decal film for inkjet printers online from Bare Metal Foil: http://bare-metal.com/Experts-Choice-Decal-Film.html

Making decals of those stickers is a very cool idea, IMO. Let us see the results!
