Compatiable Engine

Hello, I own a 98 Chevrolte Venture. From the sounds its making, I've been told the rod bearings are shot and it would be cheaper for me to have the engine replaced. The engine is a 3.4L Vin E. I've been trying to do some research online about what engines from other vehicles are compatible with my van. I found that my van has a LA1 engine in it and the following vehicles also have an LA1 engine in them.

1996 Chevrolet Lumina APV/Pontiac Trans Sport/Oldsmobile Silhouette
1997-2004 Chevrolet Venture/Pontiac Montana/Oldsmobile Silhouette
1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero GL/GLS
1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am SE/GT
2002-2005 Pontiac Aztek/Buick Rendezvous
2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala
2000-2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Could I buy an engine from any one of these vehicles and put it into my van? If not then what engines from what vehicles are compatible with my van?

Hey, Sorry for the delay. The answer to your question is yes and no. The LA1 engine basic configuration is the same for all of those applications, however the engines do not have all of the same level of peripheral equipment. If your intention is to get a complete motor with accessories like power steering pump, alternator, etc... and dropping the whole thing in your van then you are probably going to have to get an engine out of a '98 Venture that had the same options as you have. If you are planning on taking your engine out and swapping the basic engine (block, heads, and intake manifold) you can get away with just about any of the engines on that list. You best bet is to check with a junk yard and make sure that the part you are looking at is compatible. The junk yard has a book (or now a CD) called a "Hollander Interchange which tells what fits into what and which parts have to be changed in order to make things like engines work in different application.
