Question 97 Ford Powerstroke - ROUGH IDLE

Idles fine in park, but not in drive. Runs great above idle. Has new fuel pump. Original engine, 303K. Surges, like starving for fuel. Bad or stuck injectors? Anyone?

Re: 97 Ford Powerstroke - ROUGH IDLE

does it have a rough start? I sugest running it easy, and put some lucas fuel aditive in it. My dad put the powerchip on his and then drove it like a sports car pulling a 3ton trailer around, and he just lost his 97's engine at 315k. I personally have 2 96 trucks with the 7.3 in them, hope they don't burn up!

Re: 97 Ford Powerstroke - ROUGH IDLE

A diesel engine usually needs a rebuild by 250k. It sounds like the fuel injectors.

Re: 97 Ford Powerstroke - ROUGH IDLE

REBUILD? UH NOO. I have had a POWERSTROKE go 404K with strong compression. A well taking care of diesel engine will last between 320K to 450K on average. The '94 was the first year powerstroke so they didnt last as long. I have full compression and full fuel pressure. It ISN'T the injectors nor the injection pump. It was the injector control module. It alone is a $1000 plus my exhaust gas back pressure sensor was shot, theres another $300. My truck has 303K, full compression, no metal shavings in oil & no oil leaks. My truck is almost like new, well taken care of. Never add anything to the fuel unless it is DIESEL KLEEN, the only proven additive that works for diesels. I have personally have had 5 FORD diesels and never one that didnt last atleast 350K. Hell my first one '90 F350 4X4 7.3L non turbo went 376K and on only 5 cylinders running full compression, 1 half compression and 2 died cylinders. And it still got 17 on the highway with plenty of power. Don't tell me that diesels only last 250K, thats a gas engines average life span.
