Parking Brake Release Button Popped Off

We bought a 98 Cherokee Limited 2 months ago. Last night the button (for lack of a better description) sprung off the parking brake release while we were out at the store. We also found a spring on the floor as well - one end is larger than the other. Does anyone know the right way to put this thing back together? Or does this mean that we'll have to be paying a visit to the local Chrysler dealer?

Has anyone ever had this happen or is it commonplace? Thanks for any help you can give.
