wtf is that sound??? w/sound clip
this is the sound my subs make with my new amp. i recorded this at a low volume and with the engine off. if it makes a difference the subs are polk gnx(175rms) and amp, lanzar sl800d(500wrms@2ohms).
the pop randomly comes and goes, and the rattling heard afterwards just fades away until the sub sounds normal again... sub_pop.mp3

sounds exactly like my brother's system when he turns it up higher than it's supposed to go. And he has a small amp with a small unpowerful sub.

can it be caused by a loose power cable? i dont know why, but i was pulling on the 12v(from under the seat, not from the amp) and it turned off. so i just tugged on it a little again, and it turned back on.

Are you talking about that whistle-pop noise at the start of the sound clip? If so, it's not blown speakers, plus, you said they were at low volume, so I doubt it's the amps clipping or anything... Definitely sounds like a cap discharge somewhere...
Reminds me of one day when I was messing around with my guitar, had it on a really heavy distortion setting, and I picked up a camera. When I turned the camera on to charge the flash caps, it got picked up by the pickups in the guitar and amped/distorted, but had a very similar sound... I'm no stereo expert by any means, but my guess is that something somewhere (probably a cap or coil) is inducing noise into the system.

do you think its a problem being transmitted through the amp or caused by the amp? when i put my old sub amp in, i dont hear that noise. but if it was because of the amp i would think it would be more of a constant noise. but it just keeps coming and going away.
if it is some cap or discharge as you said, wouldnt that affect all amps and not just when i put the lanzar in. btw, where could i check about those "discharges", i have no idea what youre talkin about. i dont know much about the electrical innerworkings of a car. also, today it was getting real bad. the sony that was running the mids was turning off constantly, and of course pops were still coming out of the subs even after the sony turned off. to fix it, i turn the HU off and on, and sometimes the sony amp would stay on for about 5sec then turn off again. im about to give up, but i dont want to. ive already bought that new amp, speakers and a cap.

diffently power related. Try turning the gain down on the amp and try it again. The amp just might be fucked internally.

well im still unsure. but i think it had something to do with the lanzar & sony specifically. i took out the sony totally. im using the jensen for the highs(which actually sounds better than the sony) and the lanzar for the subs. i played through a couple songs and nothing yet, but i havent driven anywhere. im crossing my fingers thatll it will be ok. guess ill find out tomm when i goto work.
thanx for everyones help

the Sony amp might be causing RF interference in the Lanzar amp.

If the Sony amp is blown, it can be fixed ..... if they are both ok, then I guess it's a tough shit kinda thing. You might be able to use a filter on the power line to get rid of the noise.
