QUICK HELP!! Starter replacement!

My 02 Silverado will not start today. It ran fine and now it just clicks. I replaced the battery and no help. I have determined it to be a starter as it smokes when tried.... I need to know how to get the old starter out so I can avoid a hefty core charge. I have the bolts out and it is loose, but I cant wedge it out. Some one please help quick as I am getting frustrated.runaround

Re: QUICK HELP!! Starter replacement!

O.K. Here's the trick to this one, block out about 3 hours of your life to tackle this one, and plan on doing it while there's still plenty of daylight. My mistake was having to fix it tonight and then running out of daylight. If you wiggle it just right and take the heat shield off the solenoid it slips out pretty easy. Well, easier, I don't know how easy this can be. To get it back in, just wigle it some more, hit it with a hammer(not to hard), throw something(not the starter), and curse. OR you can just take it somewhere and have to sell blood for the next year to pay it off. Good thing the first one lasted 200K miles.

OH one more thing, it fixed my hard start problem. All along I was under the impression it was the fuel pump/fpr/fuel filter. Turns out it was just my starter getting weak.

Re: QUICK HELP!! Starter replacement!

you just got to trun and twist till it gets free. most of the trucks i have worked on, the starter comes out when you pull it back and then stand it strate up and then drop it strate down by the frame.

check in the yellow pages for a place that rebuilds starters and alts. a lot of the times you can get one fixed or replaced there cheaper than a auto parts store.I have one shop here, its a one man shop. he carrys the populer parts a lot of the time he can rebuild it and make it better than when it came from the factory.
