2000 Civic Lx a/c problems!!

I have a 2000 civic lx and the compressor will not turn on. i know if the system has low pressure it will not kick on..and i went to the Low side and the High side and pressed the shrader valve with a screw driver and nothing comes out....so is there a way to jump the a/c compressor to make sure thats not whats bad? otherwise its probably just because i have a leak somewhere in the system.
