78' K5 Blazer starting problems

Hey everyone,

I have a 78 K5 that runs great, but every once in awhile (at least twice a week for the last three) the SOB won't start. I bought this rig from a friend as a project and for a little while I was having problems getting my A/F right so it bogged a lot, I never gave much thought to the motor not kicking right over. Now though, all engine issues are resolved and its getting into electrical, which I'm clueless about.

The first time this happened I was driving away from my house, pulled up to a stop sign, engine died, tried to turn it over and nothing. The voltage meter stays right around eight or nine when it won't start but when running is right around thirteen. A jumpstart gets it going everytime, but randomly it decides to not start. There is a high pitch whine (quiet) and the normal sounds of a healthy engine turning over, but then it winds down and I have to give it a jump. Had the battery and alternator tested and both checked out. Any ideas?

Thanks guys!

Re: 78' K5 Blazer starting problems

These are a pain in the a$$ issues. It most likely will end up being a bad connection or a bad wire somewhere in the electrical system. Start off my checking continuity to all grounding points. Those are typically the main issues since they typically terminate at the engine, frame or body mounting points.

Good luck with it and believe me, it's gonna take a lot of perseverance

Re: 78' K5 Blazer starting problems

thats exactly what i was afraid of. i'm dropping old ironhide off at the shop on monday to get him checked out. i just don't think i have the technical expertise to figure out a really complex electrical issue. so it looks my project just got to the throw money at it till its fixed point.

thanks for a quick response!
