oh crap

gotta love those inaccurate home scales that show you much lighter than you are and lure you into a false sense of security.

i've got to drop down to 160lbs for rowing by mid-september (whenever our first competition is). i can probably get away with being 165 and lose 5lbs in water weight and stuff. my scale was showing me at 175lbs so i figured it might be 5lbs off so i could lose 10-20lbs in the last two months pretty easily. just went to the scale at my university gym and it showed me at 190lbs!!! so i've got to lose 25-30lbs in about 2 months.

my mom's work has access to this employee assistance plan that has all kinds of services, one of which is a dietician. so i'm going to be getting a dietician, meal plan, etc. probably going to be doing 1-2hrs of cardio every day, maybe some weights if i have time. i'm also taking a summer physics course from 7-10 monday-wednesday nights and hopefully going to be getting a job soon (long story about how i lost my summer job, my boss' fault) so it'll be a shitload of work. thinking of documenting my progress (pictures, etc.)

anyone else had to lose a shitload of weight in a short ammount of time like this?

Re: oh crap

Ive never had to lose any weight for anything but I would definately be interested to see how your progress goes. What would be the next higher weight class form 160?

Re: oh crap

for rowing either you're lightweight or you're open weight. i'm too short for open (has to do with my stroke being shorter, etc.) so i'm at a disadvantage. most people in open are 6'2" or taller, at least 190lbs (usually 200+), so if i don't make it to 160, i'll probably be damn close by then, so i'll probably be between 160 and 170, 5'8.5" going against those monsters. i want to take pictures every 5lbs just for my own documentation, to see the changes. i kind of hope i've got 30lbs of fat on me but i honestly don't know if i do. i really don't want to have to try to lose muscle.

Re: oh crap

just a bit of an update: i think i was carrying alot of extra weight when i weighed at 190 because very quickly after i droped to 185. i don't think i was drinking enough and i wasn't eating very well so once i changed my diet a bit (fruit instead of chips, whole wheat instead of white, etc) i droped weight pretty quickly. right now i'm back where i was in early spring, around 179. this really gives me hope because now it really increases my chances of making it and i can eat a bit more, which saves me from being grumpy.

one thing i've learned is that you can really change your cravings. i'm eating fruit instead of junk food, and now i'll crave a peach instead of chips. one thing that really helps though is not having stuff like that in the house. now that we don't have chips (i bought groceries this week because my 'rents weren't there) it's alot easier, and when you ARE craving them, if they aren't there you have to grab fruit to replace them.

i haven't been able to get to the gym nearly as much as i'd like. i haven't gone this week (i wanted to go two days but didn't because of stuff hapening at home, or i was utterly exhausted from work) but i'm going to the cottage this weekend and plan on swimming alot.

Re: oh crap

keep it up. at least you do have time to do it unlike me. sleep, wake up, shower, work in fast food, and come home about 5 days a week. the other 2 are doing things that need to be done.

i think i might be able to fit in cardio before work a couple of these days. we'll see.

Re: oh crap

^ Thats pretty much my problem. I work 35 hours a week and have full time school. The other time is either with my g/f, doing housework, etc. Sucks. Once school is done I hope to get into a good routine.

Re: oh crap

i wish i was working 35 a week. this week i've already worked 42hrs mon-thurs, not including driving (about an hour every day, sometimes more if the job site is farther) and not including today (probably an 8hr day). in total i will have been doing work for about 60hrs this week.

Re: oh crap

GL losing the weight. It sounds like you can do it if you stay motivated.

Personally, I lose weight and burn calories simply by sitting on the couch using the remote control or by typing on the keyboard. I've always been rather skinny, but once I became Type 2 diabetic I had to watch my sugar intake. I'm afraid to work out too much because I think I'll lose even more weight. At 5'9" and 135 lbs. it's not too bad, but I've always had a history of joint and back pain which sucks... sucks even worse as you get older...

How old are you? I have pinched nerves in my back and joint pain also. Im not sure out diabetes, but I know what working out I have done has decreased my back pain tremendously. And since my legs are getting stronger it takes some of the pressure off of my joints. I can actually feel where my leg muscles are taking the main force of walking, running, etc where in the past it has just gone straight to my knees.

Re: oh crap

I'm 33. I've been a relatively active person all of my life. I skateboarded on/off for 20+ years. I think sitting at a desk job for 8+ hours a day, 5 days a week has decreased my strength. I stretch all the time but do not actually "work out". I can crack just about all of my bones at will. My wife says I have that Restless Leg Syndrome or whatever. I believe it's due to nerves... possibly arthritis.

Re: oh crap

I'm on the other side of the scale! Trying to build UP the weight, but managing to do it ok with diet and gym despite working an 84 hour week.

Re: oh crap

yeah i've started a little competition with a friend of mine, whoever loses 15lbs the quickest gets a case of beer.

the reason i didn't need to lose it then is a mixture of a couple of things. one, there was another guy in the boat who was overweight but is pretty lean so it'll be hard for him to lose weight (he's the guy i've got the bet with), and it would be hard for me to stay strong and lose weight that quickly. the thing that really threw the idea out of the window was when i got kidney failure and was out of rowing for two weeks, that set us back alot and made the whole idea pretty stupid.

i've now got almost a year to lose 20lbs so i'll be able to do it no problem. i'm at around 175 and i have to drop to 160 but i'll lose as much as possible (goal is to get down to 5% bodyfat) so that i can 1) be as light as possible and move the boat faster, and 2) be able to gain muscle if i can drop to lower than 160. i love doing weights and building muscle so if i'm allowed to do that i'll be very happy
