96 escort A/C

1.9L automatic. Fan doesn't work with A/C and probably not with temp sender. Wife said was getting hot when stopped (her car). Can't find fan relays (relays I can find don't match with fan or schematic) and is there anything in between senders and relays? One schematic show a constant control relay module. Can't find it either.

Re: 96 escort A/C

If the car is overheating, check to be sure your radiator is not plugged up.

The fan relays are probably located in the fender area under the air cleaner. You would have to remove the air cleaner to access them... such is the case in my 94 anyway.

Before you even go that far... try to run a wire directly to the fan motor and see if it operates at all. The fan should come on when the AC is activated, so I would think the motor is toast.

If you use a code reader, it will be able to send signals to the relays and make the fan operate.... will give you error codes for anything it finds wrong.

Re: 96 escort A/C

I don't know about the '96, but the '95 1.9L has two fan relays (lo-speed relay and hi-speed relay), and there's also a 'Cooling Fan Power Relay' located inside the engine compartment fuse box.

The wiring diagram, and location diagrams for the relays are on this thread, which you might want to take a look at and see if it matches up with yours:

Re: 96 escort A/C

Found the two relays. Thanks. No power coming in on the LG/B wire. Schematic show the power relay that feeds them (no power there either) in the fuse block but when I took the fuse block apart it seems to just pass through headed for the firewall. Looked all up under the drivers dash and couldn't find a relay with that color wire. Any other place this relay could be?

Re: 96 escort A/C

If there's no power at the cooling fan power relay, then is the cooling fan fuse intact? And if it is intact, is it receiving 12V on the input side? According to the wiring diagram, that's a 40A fuse which should be 'Hot at all times', and it's located in the same fuse box as that power relay.

Engine compartment fuse box:

Re: 96 escort A/C

Checked fuse. It's O.K.. Haven't found main fan power relay yet. The no power I was talking about was to the two fan speed relays. Just rechecked the relay in the fuse block labeled fuel inj. in the engine compartment fuse block and the wire colors match up with what in my schematic is the main fan relay. It's raining now. Will check as soon as I can Thanks.

Re: 96 escort A/C

If you notice in that diagram which I just posted of the fuse box, it says 'Ignition Relay*' with an asterisk, and then at the bottom centre of the diagram it says '*Cooling Fan Relay on 1.9L engine', so it should be that one. That one diagram serves for the 1.9L, and the 1.8L manual and automatics so it's a little confusing.

Guess carbon on the contacts. Took it apart and could make it work but after cycling power it wouldn't work. Thanks Selectron and mightymoose 22.
