New Head and new problems
I just replaced the old head on my 4.9L because it was carcked about a month ago. Now two weeks ago it started struggaling to idle and accelrate.
I put brand new champion copper plus plugs in and gapped them at .042. With the new plugs it still run the same way with a black carbon build up on the plugs. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance yall. |

Re: New Head and new problems
I took the rockers off the new head and put the ones from the old head on it and it runs a little better (note LITTLE). I rebuilt the carb and cleaned out the choke it was drity but not the problem. My dad says it could be the timing or rings.

Re: New Head and new problems
Yestarday it would run but not idle. Now today it will not start. It's backfiring when i crank it so i need to change the cam, distributor or timing chain. Plus the rings. I bought it in late 05 with 156,839 miles it's now at 170,000 miles.

Re: New Head and new problems
Really sounds like bad timing or a bad distributor, specially if the problem is getting worse. Pending on your funds buy a new distributor. Check for bent pushrods, what yr? If the distributor is good the timing might have got off somehow at the chain.
