Side Mirrors
Last year someone decided that they would remove my passenger side mirror. I have a 96 Geo Metro hatchback. I started looking for mirrors, and they are out there, but I thought I would ask here to find the best source, and if there is anything I should be wary of when looking.

Re: Side Mirrors
Junkyard's the best place. I just got one last week for $10.00 at a u-pull-it. Three screws and you're all set.

Re: Side Mirrors
The best price I've found yet on a new high quality outside mirror is $ 58.03 for a passenger side one from rockauto.com. That includes the shipping charge. Old mirrors from the junk yard often have brittle plastic and will soon fracture where the screws attach to them.
By the way, my Metro is a 1995 LSI hatchback. |

Re: Side Mirrors
I haven't found plastic cracking to be a problem, but it's your choice...$10 vs $58... for an old Metro I know which option I'd choose.

Re: Side Mirrors
When my passenger mirror was broken by a falling two by six (oops) I couldn't just screw it back on cause the plastic broke. I ended up sticking a bolt through it with a washer and nut holding it to the car. This is ten times better than it was, as it doesn't rattle at all. This of course is only a solution for the passenger mirror, cause the driver side has the interior adjustment where the bolt would otherwise go.

Re: Side Mirrors
It might be a good idea to get a cheap one from the junk yard if you can find one as sbiddle and others have had good luck with them. If it isn't satisfactory, you can always get a new one.
The reason I had to get new ones for my 1995 hatchback are as follows (1) The original ones became brittle and my dog broke the passenger side one off by stepping on it when hanging out the window, and the driver's side just fell off one day. (2) the mirrors, which were only adjustable by moving the glass with your hand, constantly vibrated out of adjustment. This was partially fixable with a bead of silicone between the glass and plastic frame. (3) the local junk yards had no mirrors for my 1995 lsi hatchback. The new mirrors don't get out of adjustment and hopefully will last a long time. My neighbor who is a master mechanic told me it is common for the plastic in mirrors to deteriorate and cause problems. It is possible that the plastic in my old mirrors became brittle from sitting in the sun for 12 years in South Florida, or that the 1995 and later models have inferior plastic. I have seen one earlier mirror from a junk yard that seemed to be in good shape. Anyway, good luck. |
