2000 Escort ZX2 Tail light Socket installed incorrectly

Hello,

Some idiot changed my girlfriends tail lights the last time they burned out and put the socket in the wrong way. Now I cannot turn it all the way to unlock it and change the bulb. What is the next course of action? Seems to me that it cannot come off w/o cutting off the end piece that is preventing the counter clockwise turn. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
