1996 Silverado - Fuel Pump Replacement

I want to replace the in-tank electric fuel pump on my 96 Silverado, 5.7L. It has 90000 miles, so want to replace it as a precaution.

Do most people pull the assembly out of the tank and just replace the pump itself (about $100-150), or is it common to just replace the entire sending unit and assembly ($300). Fuel gauge works fine as it is.

I've been told I should replace the wire harnesses too?

Appreciate any time saving suggestions!

Thanks

Re: 1996 Silverado - Fuel Pump Replacement

Most people replace the enitire assembly. I wouldn't bother replacing if it doesn't need it though. No point wasting a day under your truck and $300, but that's just me. With only 90k, if you are not seeing any problems, it may run for much longer.

If your going to go to the trouble of doing one, I would do both. But I agree w/ rjeffery, I wouldn't do anything until it breaks. You can easily get 200,000 miles on them, or it might crap out tomorrow.
