Cherokee 98 Exhaust Problem

i HAVE RECENTLY BOUGHT A CHEROKEE 4.0LTD 1998. THE EXHAUST STARTED BLOWING AND WHEN TAKEN TO A GARAGE THEY REPLACED THE TAIL PIE AND BACK BOX.
WITHIN A MONTH THE TAIL PIPE STARTED MAKING A BLOWING NOISE AND WHEN IDLING THE BOX RATTLED BADLY.
They then replaced the box again and now within a month again this has also started blowing and is now rattling when iddling and is basically really noisy.
This will need replacing but i don;t know why it keeps happening. Any suggestions??

BOX??? The Muffler? or the Catalytic Converter? Huh?!

Take it back to the shop. Make them cover their work.

Re: Cherokee 98 Exhaust Problem

Please try to be more descriptive in the furute. It's very hard to figure out what's really going on when you use vague terms like "back box".

I have no idea what "blowing noise" your describing. Again, please be a bit more desriptive. Is it a whistling? a puffing, popping? ???

As for the shaking at idle, maybe your idle is rough causing the engine to shake and shake up all the way down the exhaust. This could loosen up any clamps or even crack some welds.

You can try the search feature to look for rough idle.

Re: Cherokee 98 Exhaust Problem

Apologies, i will try and explain a bit clearer although do not have much mechanical knowledge,

I bought my cherokee 4.0ltd 1998 auto in October last year, initially the cat was blowing and the garage i bought it from replaced it.

About two months ago my exhaust sounded rough like a deep popping noise. I looked under the car and the very back box section before the tail pipe looked like it was cracking from the seams. I took it to Kwik Fit (garage) who said the back section of the exhaust needed replacing (tail pipe & back box).
They replaced this and within a month it sounded like it was blowing and then it got worse and was popping. After a while when idling the whole back section of the exhaust sounded like it had loads of metal rattling around inside it.

I took it back to the garage and they have replaced the tail pipe and back box again.

It is now a month on and the same noises are happening again.

I hope this makes more sense
