Re: 99 Tahoe - fuel pump coming out...

Does all of the have the white plastic tabs sticking out 2 sides.
If so squeeze the white plastic tabs and pull on it.

Where did you find a rebuilt factory pump?

Re: 99 Tahoe - fuel pump coming out...

The system should self prime. It may take 2-4 key on-off cycles to do it as when you turn the key to run the pump only runs for about 2-3 seconds each cycle. On my '98 Sub the fittings did not have the white push tabs. I had to use a small flat blade screwdriver to release the internal tabs. Make sure you don't have a fuel leak at those tank fittings.

Re: 99 Tahoe - fuel pump coming out...

yes the fitting with the tabs (not white) u slide the tool into it...
Well.... I had the tool... it didnt work for crap... I bought another set (better set) I still couldnt get it to release... after a couple hrs of trying & against my better judgment - I cut the lines.... put it all back togther using a peice of metal line clamped to the hose ends.....

Now the fun - I was able to prime the system (I saw fuel at the strater valve) It wouldnt start - hit it with a mist of started fluid - started right up had throttle response (done by hand) would not restart by itself...
Checked throttle inside with foot - stumbles and wont go over 2000 rpm (truck had 0 issues before)..
These issues could they be because I cut the lines and rigged em up.... fuel now has to go thru a narrower piece of tube.... Or bad pump????
guess I'll be calling around for new lines........
- Any other ideas??

wow

Re: 99 Tahoe - fuel pump coming out...

If it will start and run with starter fluid.
It sounds like your fuel pressure is to low.

You need to get a fuel pressure gauge on it and check fuel pressure.
Post back fuel pressure readings.

Hard to start cold.
Check cold start fuel pressure.
Check engine running fuel pressure.
Check engine running on the road fuel pressure.
Then shut it off and watch for fast leak down.
Pinch off at rubber part or block off return line and check full pressure.
Later V6 and V8 gm engines should have 60-66 fuel pressure.
Cold start should be 64-65 lbs of pressure.
If you do not have full fuel pressure on a cold start the injectors will not squirt fuel.
Do not leave home without it.
Engine running should be 60-66 lbs pressure depending on engine load.
Full pressure with return pinched off should be 75-85 or more.
And if it has a fast leak down after shut off you have a leak.
Post back fuel pressure readings.

Also we need a little more info.
What engine? And engine code?
What was the problem to start with?
Are you sure you got the right fuel pump application?
What was the pump no from the web page you used?

It is better to use the AC Delco or Delphi fuel pump module rather than just replacing the fuel pump.

You need to get the proper lines on not a splice in set up.
Does the splices have any leakage?

Re: 99 Tahoe - fuel pump coming out...

hopefully you guys are out there today..
Well I got the new fuel line (feed & return)
new fuel filter
tried priming the pump - stil wont start...
I put a pressuer tester on and when cranking is slowly rises to like 22 then when stopped cranking it jumps up to 40 then comes back down....
everything is hooked back up except the filler lines - there kinda half on... would this messup pressure reading???
Or is the pump wrong and need another new???
thanks

oh tested at strater valve just behind throttle body
99 Tahoe 350 V8 Auto 97000 miles - ran fine prior to swapping pump....

How much fuel in the tank?
Make sure over a 1/4 tank.
Is the pump getting good 12 volts to it and a good ground?

If so you have a bummer pump. Or did not get it in right.

Might as well pitch it in the trash can and get you a good Ac delco or delphi pump module.

Re: 99 Tahoe - fuel pump coming out...

Well tossed in the dealer pump (module) and she fired back up!!!!! wish I went this route prior but gotta learn it the hard way..........I think the 'problem' is that I got the wrong pump - Autozone & Napa showed 3 types of pumps for a 99 tahoe 350 auto 4door 4x4... so maybe i got a wrong one..........now a set of shocks to complete the weekend of fuel pump, brakes & an oil change....Thanks for the help!!!!!

Re: 99 Tahoe - fuel pump coming out...

You are welcome.
And thanks for posting back how it went.
Yes several different pumps.
Dealer OEM does hurt the old pocket book but only a one time hurt.
Glad you got it going.
Good luck
