91 Lumina, Too much fuel?
My wife and I just bought a 1991 Lumina APV in Las Vegas, NV. When we idle it for 15 min in 105 degree heat (like a/c, it wards off heat stress) and then shut it down, then try to start it, it just cranks. Also, when we stop and get out, it sits in a cloud of gas fumes. I am old school and would think that it is flooding, running way too rich, but this is a newer vehicle, therefore it could be some thing else and if left to my own devises then I would try to figure out how to lean the mix. We let it sit for an hour, then it started. Any hints would be appreciated.

Re: 91 Lumina, Too much fuel?
'91..then 3.1 engine.
NOt starting when hot can be ignition problem, a common issue: ignition module (plugged in distributor).. is an heat sensitive electronic component and in all makes of cars, is known to behave that way after years of use....I would test this...meaning, install a new one , specially if still running on original. Even if it does not prove to be the culprit, having a spare at that age is like an insurance. About fumes.....fumes of what..sure it is fumes of gas? THis 3.1 engine is reknown for blowing head gaskets, hence overheating..so do you have other signs? FLuctuating temp needle, steaming at radiator, irregular heater performance..mmm..you do not need that in NEvada......and this extra heat can exacerbate the ignition module too....so look for telltales signs.... ANyway, blocked injector does happen (there are 2) but this would have a serious impact on fuel burn...so is fuel consumption "normal" ?

Re: 91 Lumina, Too much fuel?
We bought this on Friday, so "normal" fuel consumption is something I don't know. Smells like fuel, temp gauge is steady, but who knows whether it is accurate, no steam and there is water in it. The smell is worse in hotter weather. Thanks for the tip on the ignition module, I will get one.
