What year is the Mustang, Is it a 90 like the Town Car? I can check my interchange program for you. Also make sure you use the spedo gear from the Town Car trans.

Given that the mustang is shorter you'll probably have to change the tail. Also try looking for 1988-1991 Town Car (yes even with the 4.6L, they used the AOD up until early 1992)/Grand Marquis/Crown Victoria as they'll bolt right in.
