Newb from ohio

Hey everyone well im new to hondas a just purchased a 97 civic for a pretty good deal i think paid 3000 Heres whats all done

dc sport 4-2-1 header
dc sport intake with k&n filter
skunk 2 weightd shift knob (440grams)
Catback exhaust
Halo headlights
Altelzza tailights
Came with full body kit (not put on)

it just hit 100000 miles today

Now i wanted to kno if i got ripped off or what the details are about this car and what the motor has horspeower wise if its v tec or not? I honestly have no clue here are some pics. Sorry if i sound dumb like i said i never owned a honda or new enything about them i was into DSMS for a while and just got out of it soo i sold my talon for 6000 and have another 3000 to even add into this car. I put my own turbo setup in my last car and loved it soo i might drop one in here also.

Re: Newb from ohio

thats a pretty decent deal..the car isnt gonna be faaast..the motor in it looks like a SOHC non-VTEC. you could go to a junkyard and find a b18 bottom end with a b16 head and add that turbo..or just make a SOHC turbo beast. id check your regular maintenance before tweekin it but have fun bud. where you at in OH??

oh yeah check your engine code..its stamped right where the block meets the tranny..behind the left blue ac cap in your picture

Re: Newb from ohio

Thanks for the reply....im located in Garfield Heights ohio right by cleveland. I mean the car runs amazing no check engine light i replaced plugs, wires, cap & rotor changed the oil and changed brakes. The car was basically owned by one owner the kid who had it before me his dad purchased it i beleive brand new and gave it to his kid soo one or two owners whatever you consider it. haha But soo far i love it noo its not fast but gas milage is amazing. Well im gonna check the engine code in the morning soo i can find out what it is.

Re: Newb from ohio

You are correct. Z6's and Y8's were SOHC VTEC.

Re: Newb from ohio

theres a lot of threads about vtec not kickin in..i think i actually asked a while back..it should kick in around 5500 or so. youve gotta have the right oil pressure. yada yada yada ill find the link lol i dont wanna give you false info. this honda thread is loaded with good info man so always search before you ask and youll find most of your answers.

Re: Newb from ohio

hahah...Well i was doing a little research on how to test the vtec solenoid. Now i read that it sais check it with a volt meter and a power tester or whatever its called. How would i do this? like which wires would i test and hw would i have the solenoid tested with the volt meter i do own both things.

Re: Newb from ohio

the solenoid is a little grey cylinder that looks kind of like a film canister by your block..ive never looked at a y8 up close but youll see it there. id think you could just stick the needles into the socket where the vtec solenoid wires plug into. you should be able to hear vtec engage tho..just drive in third and then slam it into second and put the pedal down..it should change in pitch and then let off so that your just cruising down the rpms and you should be able to feel it kick off around 5k
