90 xj coolant tank mod help

Okay - a few years ago I read about a coolant tank swap for the 90 xj. Now I can't find the article and my coolant tank has started to leak. I really don't want to go to the trouble of the closed system to open system swap.

In this article the guy used a pressurized coolant tank from another vehicle instead of the stock xj tank. Apparently this other tank was beefier than the xj tank and the guy claimed he never had a problem since. Seems like it was a Ford, but I really can't remember. Anyone hear of this or can you point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Your local scrapyard will have a replacement. Just make sure you 'burp' the system. (fill it on an incline, 15-20* should do it)

Okay - I finally found some information from a few years ago in case anyone else is interested. NAXJ had these discussions off and on.

Apparently there are several alternatives (I only knew of the Ford replacement until now). Anyway, one guy used a late 90's Ford Crown Vic tank. Another suggested that a 93 - 97 Dodge Intrepid (or Eagle vision, or Chrysler LSH) was almost an exact fit after you remove the existing braket. I believe he had to get an adapter for the hose. Another possibility is a Grand Am or Volvo tank. All of these are usable pressurized tanks.

The best alternative was to use a Moroso Aluminum expansion tank (part number MOR-63651 from Summit Racing). It uses a regular radiator cap and has an overflow tube that you can divert to a regular overflow bottle. By using this setup you have effectively changed your system to an open system on the cheap - no need to change out the radiator and other parts plus a more durable expansion tank.

I checked a local salvage yard and they want $15 for a pressurized tank I pull or for $30 they will get me an aftermarket Cherokee tank with a lifetime warranty. Never heard of a lifetime warranty on an aftermarket tank before - but for the extra $15 I am tempted. The Moroso will cost close to $100 plus time and effort to adapt it to the jeep. Decisions, decisions....
