EGR Valve

What problems would a bad EGR Valve cause. I have a 1996 5.7 Silverado.

Sputtering, loss of power, smells like its running rich. My buddy had a problem with his 95 5.7L. I told him to replace the EGR valve and after he replaced everything else, he finally took my advice (which I got from this forum), and voila problem fixed.
