Seat Belts
I have a 1994 Olds Cutlass Supreme and it has the lap/shoulder seat belt that is all attached to the door of the car. My question is this. If I "get on" the brakes (without skidding), the shoulder belt locks into place and prevents me from going forward. The lap belt on the other hand does not lock. I was told by a GM mechanic that the lap belt will lock into place but only upon a major frontal impact. Is this correct?
Thanks Ramrodder |

Re: Seat Belts
I believe the dealer is correct. Also, some vehicles made in the late 80"s and early 90"s have small levers on the back of the seat to release the lap belts if you are parked on a steep hill facing downward. A owners manual should have this information.

Re: Seat Belts
the lever on the back of the seats is for releasing the seat back when parked on a hill. That has nothing to do with the seatbelts.
I believe the dealer is correct on this as well. I have only had had the shoulders lock up in all 4 of my W-bodies (1988 Cutlass Supreme, 1990 Grand Prix STE, 1995 Cutlass Supreme SL, and 1996 Grand Prix SE). |
