Question Recharge A/C '99 (3.8L)

First time ever to recharge A/C.
I would like to know location of recharge port. Also, are all recharge kits the same or do I need to get a specific one for GM. Also, what other tips are out there that may be of help to do a good recharge.
Many thanks for any input.

Re: Recharge A/C '99 (3.8L)

Here in Canada you can not recharge an A/C unit, you must take it to a repair shop and they must find and fix the leak and only they can recharge the A/C I guess you are in the US and it's leagal to do this. I will warn you if you do not know how and the pressure you should charge it at "Don't" you will do more damage to the unit. Button line why recharge it will just leak out again, you must find the leak and you can not do that without How to and the equipment needed.

This type of repair is not designed for amateur attempts, first the system should be evacuated and checked to see if it holds vacuum, where did the freon go? Second a partial charge should be added to engage the compressor, then the system leak tested with the proper equipment. It is the forum policy not to advise on potentially dangerous repair procedures.

Re: Recharge A/C '99 (3.8L)

It is my understanding that the amount of Freon normally dissipates over the years. My A/C is 8 years without a recharge. All I'm trying to do is top it off. I see (2) ports and am not !00% sure which is the correct one to hook up to.

Your charging hose will only fit on one of them, which is the low pressure/suction side. I do not have the 3.8L so I cannot tell you exactly where it is, but it should be capped with a threaded black cover. On the 3.5L it is right at the firewall. The high pressure side is a larger fitting than the low. When I add freon I use a kitchen scale and measure the weight of the can. I am hesitant to add more than 4-8 oz. as the system only holds around 32 from empty. Over charging is a problem just as is under charging.

Good luck

How can you recharge your unit if you do not know at what pressure etc etc. If your A/C is working leave it alone, if it is not working take it to a pro. Some things can not be done by amatures
