Truck miss firing up hills, bad EGR Valve?

I have a 1996 1500 5.7L 2wd Siverado. I've had a problem going up hills while on the highway around 65mpr. The truck starts to, what feels like a miss fire right before droping down into 4th but after it's in 4th and the RPMS are up it goes away. Now here's the kicker, twice after going up this one piticuler hill which I've taken every day the last two weeks, the Service light has come on. I stop the truck at a stop sign and feels like it wants to stall. The first time I pulled over and shut the engine off, I opened the hood to check the oil and look around. About 1 minute after the engine was off I heard a click. I restarted the truck and ran fine but the SES was still on. It wasn’t till the next day that the light went out. Then I did some research found out it that it was the EGR Valve and that I could remove it and clean it. I did that and did a full tune up; plugs, wires, cap and rotor and the truck ran better. So there I was all happy until I was coming home from breakfast out with my wife and was all happy and again, it happens. I did the same thing, shut engine off and heard a click. This happen twice in two days so I took the EGR off again and cleaned it with carb cleaner. No light but still miss firing. Can anybody help? Maybe the O2 sensor or bad Cad converter. By the way, I get a 1406 code while the SES light is on.

Thanks,
Dryman

Re: Bad EGR Valve

I would check the intake mainifold gasket for leaks. The 5.0 and 5.7 are very bad a bout leaking. An egr valve would affect idling not driving down the road. I sounds like a vacuum laek to me

spray carburator cleaner around the gasket area. if you hear a change in the motor you have found the bad spot.
