Question 02 Mercury Sable Heating/Cooling Problem Please Help

Recently the heating/cooling in my car has not been working. It has been flaky. Some days it works, and some days it does not. Recently its just stopped working all together. I believe the problem is with the blower. When I turn the heat on I hear the vents open, but no air comes blowing out. I don't hear the blower kicking on. I can feel hot and cold air seeping out of the vents but not blowing. So I am almost positive both the heating and AC are still fully functional. What would be the most likely culprit here? If it is the blower where is the motor for the blower located?

Re: 02 Mercury Sable Heating/Cooling Problem Please Help

Have you tried all blower motor speeds? If so, and the blower doesn't run on any of them, I'd suggest you check for voltage to the blower motor.

The blower motor is located sort of below and forward of the glove box. Remove the trim piece from above the passenger side floor board. Once the panel is removed, you should be able to see the blower motor.

If you have battery voltage to the blower motor with the blower speed set to max, but the motor doesn't run, then I'd suggest replacing the blower motor.

If the blower works on some speeds, then your blower motor resistor probably has one or more open resistors in it.

If you get voltage to the blower with the speed set to max, but the voltage is not very close to the battery voltage, then it sounds like you have a corroded or loose connection somewhere that is severely limiting the current to the blower motor.

Thank you for the reply. I was able to locate the motor, but I have not had a chance to pull anything apart or test anything. The blower does not work on any speed settings though. It used to work occasionally, but seems to have died completely. I hope I can get this fixed soon its getting unbearably hot hear in CT.

Re: 02 Mercury Sable Heating/Cooling Problem Please Help

I have an 02 Taurus and had the same problem with the blower. After some extensive research I found out that Ford issued a "Silent" recall on the cowell on the passenger side. The cowell itself is defective for 2002 and as a result rain water dips into the car under the cowl, which happens to be where the blower is. It ends up shorting out and will quit all together. IF your car is still under warranty then it is a free fix. Otherwise you are on your own. I bought a blower at Advance Auto Parts for about $100 and replaced in less than an hour. It is very easy if you remove the glove box. Just open it and then press in the sides at the back and it will open all the way thus exposing the blower motor. I believe there is 3-4 screws and 1 plug and that is all there was to it.

thanks for the reply austin. I will be sure to remove the glove compartment for easier access. I am not sure if the car is under warranty or not but honestly id rather pay the $100 then have to deal with the crooked ass dealership.

Re: 02 Mercury Sable Heating/Cooling Problem Please Help

Just thought of this. The blower motors on this particular model taurus/sable is very, very, weak in the first place. When my car was brand new I remembered thinking, "This blower sucks". My 04 F-150 will almost blow you out of the truck but not the taurus. I also have had problems with the blend door on my taurus. it would not fully open or close in either direction so it made the a/c barely cool and the heater barely heat. That was a hell of a job to work on but better than a heater core job like the dealership had said. Good Luck
