MK3 or MK4

What is the difference between the mk2, 3 or 4???
I just got a 1996 Jetta GLS Auto from my Dad and gave it to my 18 year old son. It has 56545 miles (yes, very low mileage). I am helping my son look for parts and guidance on fixing and/or upgrading the car.
But I see many posts with the MK2 or 3 or 4, and I have no clue what that means.
thanks
Prab
