It depends: is KEY ON when you apply 12v to the gray wire?..if so, you back feed all the systems during the "prime" one second burst at KEY ON...but after that it should only run the pump..but since the pump should not run in this condition, it is possible is generates "bells and whistles".... PLease feed a few more details about your original problems (why you are doing this) and the way you are testing...

Re: testing relay on 3.8 fuel pump
Thank you for responding to my question. The car has a history of electric shorts. It was stolen when new and has never been the same again. The most recent problem is the fuel pump good or bad. Is it another short or a bad pump. The 3.8 does not seem to have a bleeder valve on the engine to check if the fuel pump is running full time without dropping the tank. If I put 12 volts at the tank I can get it to prime for about 2 seconds. Also, the Haynes repair guide shows fuel pump relay has 5 wires. This car has 5 relays. Four relays have 4 wires and one has 5 wires but the colors do not match colors on the diagram you posted. I dislike the Haynes but that is what I got. All help appreciated.

Re: 94 Trans Sport won't run... testing relay on 3.8 fuel pump
Need input ....please. After 2 weeks I am still not convinced that it is as simple as a bad fuel pump.

Re: bad gas? been down 2 weeks testing relay on 3.8 fuel pump
The reason I question bad gas is a car that I borrowed choked after I drove it after putting gas in the tank from the same station as my own car. Car started but won't stay running.

Re: testing relay on 3.8 fuel pump
THere is a valve on the fuel rail on the rear side of engine.
All the relays are the same..so you can swap them.....but they do not use all the connectors. THe "fifth" wire conneceted to the f.p. relay is labelled as RED..and applying 12V (KEY OFF). on that wire will run the pump ..I think (did not check) this is a RED wire seemingly www.avigex.ca/xport/Dsc06465.jpg going nowhere on the battery side , front of engine .. .. "applying 12 v at the tank"...??? probably "at the pump..??

Re: testing relay on 3.8 fuel pump
Problem solved . After extensive testing of all electrical possibilities, mainly due to the pump working
intermittently and the poor electrical history of this car, the pump was replaced and all is ok . Thanks to everyone who offered input. It is greatly appreciated.
