air sound?
well to my dismay i noticed while driving my caprice, i noticed and heard like the car sucking too much air. weird huh. its hard for me too explain but as a accelerate the higher i go before the trans shifts at 15 mph the engine sounds like its suckin lots of air, and as the faster i go the louder it sounds. i did check to see if the air filter cover and housing was mounted properly, which it was i could no find anything on what would cause this. anyone have any ideas on what it can be?

Re: air sound?
Sounds like some kind of vacuum leak. If you're hearing it inside the car, then the chances are good that it's a vacuum line to the A/C control. There are a few vacuum motors under the dash that activate doors for the airflow, any one of those lines or the main supply line can be suspect. They're hard lines (plastic) which get brittle over time and can break.

Re: air sound?
If it sounds like an airplane taking off, check the fan clutch. It may be shot and coming on all the time. They're supposed to work only when the theromcouple inside tells it to.

Re: air sound?
well the sound actually comes from underneath the car, right by the passenger side door, i did jack up the car and looked at all the exaust pipping and found no holes nor any leaks, would a busted catalyctic converter do such a sound as what i am experiencing with?

Re: air sound?
I think your cat is clogged up. Since the exhaust has got to go somewhere, it comes out the seams and you wind up with the loud hiss that you're hearing. If the car has over 75k miles and the cat is original, it is probably shot.
Look at the pipe off the manifold that feeds into it, which is part of the AIR system plumbing. Look over all the AIR tubing since they are prone to rotting out. The hose on the passenger side that comes off the AIR pump often rots where it meets up at the manifold tubing. You can start the car up cold and quickly check for leaks by cupping your hand under suspect areas, you only have a few seconds before it gets too hot so take a good look first when the car is off and cool.
