95 Escort Ignition key cyclinder

I have a 95 escort 1.9L. yesterday when I turned the ignition to start, a small shaft broke between the switch and ignition cyclinder. I have the switch out and the car will start if I tun the switch with a screw driver but I am lost as to how to change the broken rod. It would appear that the cyclinder has to come out somehow. Does any one have any expertize on this?
Any help would be appreciated

I've never had reason to disassemble the ignition switch and lock cylinder so I'm not familiar with that broken shaft. I do have the procedure for removing the lock cylinder on the '95 Escorts though if that would be any help. It makes reference to the switch and the cylinder but there's no mention of any component in-between them so I presume the broken shaft is an integral part of one or the other. Anyway, let me know if you want to see the cylinder removal and installation procedure, with illustrations.

Sure would appreciate it if you could forward me those procedures. I have installed a under dash switch for now until I can figure out how to remove.

I know Ford will sell just the entire mechanical part of the switch, and I know its easy to buy the electrical switch separately, but I doubt you will find replacement parts for the mechanical part of the switch.
How about a complete used ignition switch from a salvage yard? One with a key of course. On my 92 its not too hard to do. To remove the old switch: You have to remove 4 phillips head screws that hold the two halves of the column cover. Then you have to drop the column a little. There are 4 12 mm bolts holding it up, and you will probably need a flex-socket to easily undo them. With the column lowered and the plastic cover removed, there are two 12 mm bolts that clamp the ignition assembly to the column. With those unbolted, you just have to unplug the two connectors to the wiring harness.
You might need to remove the instrument cluster bezel, I cant recall. Its not hard if you have the 'torx' head sockets - the male ones. The screws are the 'female' kind. I think there are six of them.
If you plan to keep the car a while, this would be the time to replace the electrical part of the switch with a new one. Before I reinstalled mine, I cut one of the wires leading to the little white plastic housing. This stops the beep-beep-beep when I have the ignition key in the lock and have the door open.
Having a different key for the ignition hasnt turned out to be much of an annoyance.

The Ford procedure is too lengthy to post on the forum, so I've put it on a separate webpage. Their procedure says that the steering wheel and multi-function switch need to be removed but I'm not so sure about that. There's a good photo here of a stripped-down Escort having a heater core replaced. You can see the ignition switch reasonably clearly and it looks like it would be accessible with the steering wheel and multi-function switch still in place. And the Ford procedure for the '95 Escorts is here. According to that, the heads will have been sheared off the two cylinder securing bolts during assembly and you'll need to use a chisel to form a couple of screwdriver slots to get them undone.
