weird sound...

Whenever I hit a bump, usually a small one, not as much on larger ones, I notice a sound similar to that of an empty container like an oil bottle rattling around the rear portion of my car (sounds like it's coming from the left side). I already know that my rear air shocks are pretty much done, but if they're in bad enough shape, will they make a sound like that? Any info on this will be helpful.

if the shock is broken the top and bottom will rattle togther...also check stabilizer links
