The 4.7L will have a 45RFE. Which is similar to Dodge front wheel drive 4 speed automatic transmissions, as it has no bands. And adapts(learns) to driver demands. It is a fairly good transmission, unlike the rest of the truck

The 46RE behind the 5.9L is a 4 speed automatic, basically the same transmission that has been in production since 1962. Though, some mods have been made to make it an overdrive transmission, in late 1988 and fully computer controlled in around 1995 depending on model of Mopar

Re: 2001 5.9 tranny

so then my next question is will the transmission behind the 5.9 handle that power or should I expect a short transmission life?

Re: 2001 5.9 tranny

Its a pretty good transmission. Biggest problems, are the governor solenoid and sensor are crap. But thats not a big deal as long as someone don't overhaul the transmission because they don't know how to diagnose electronics. The other thing is the torque converter clutch is a little weak. Though, thats more of a problem in the gas pickups then durango. If your towing alot, then a Transgo reprogram kitŪ for the valvebody would be very helpful.
