overheating....... alot when accelerating

i have a passat gls vr6, '95 and when it warms up it gets up to about 200 degrees. when i am driving or even sometimes stopped, it will get even hotter like 216. but if i am driving and i take it out of gear and i just coast, the temp will go back down and keep going down rather quickly until i put it back in gear then it will go back up but if i am accelerating at all it tends to get hotter than if i am just cruzin. can anyone help.... i was told to check the thermostat by putting it in boiling water. anyone know how to do this and where the thermostat is located? i am not stupid with cars i just have not worked on one for several years now and i usually did body work. also if anyone know someone that can do work on a vw in the san diego county for a good price wether at a shop or not, please let me know. thank you!

Re: overheating....... alot when accelerating

I'm having some what the same problem. If you get any replys can you send them my way? If I drive for a good amount of time the temp gauge will go up. If I left off the gas alittle it goes down. Eventually the gauge will show red hot. I pull over, but the car is not overheating. I also replaced the Thermastat some months ago. Although I do have a little hole on the top of my radiador, but I don't think it's enough to do what it's doing. Thanks. Hope you or I get a reply soon.
